Nintendo to Change the Name of the Wii U?

Wii U and console Nintendo to Change the Name of the Wii U?

A few different places are reporting that they have confirmation that Nintendo will be changing the name of their newest home console, the Wii U.

This rumor is coming after Nintendo had their investors briefing yesterday afternoon. The reason behind the change is due to the confusion of the name of the 3DS. Nintendo said that the name 3DS suggested that it was simply a DS with a 3D gimmick, and consumers didn’t know that it was indeed a new DS with new hardware. The name Wii U could potentially have the same effect on the market, and consumers could once again think the Wii U is just a gimmick.

When the Wii U was announced I personally thought the name was a very poor choice. During the Wii U press conference I was confused and thought the Wii U was just the tablet, and the there was not a new console. The Wii U console even looks almostĀ identical to the Wii, and at first glance you could easily mistake the two. Changing the name would be a really smart move by Nintendo, and it would really help shake this Wii image it has created.
