Sego’s 2013 Predictions
It’s 2013 that means it’s time for some video game predictions.
Hello everyone and Happy New Year! Since it’s the new year it’s time for some predictions. These predictions will cover everything I think will happen in the gaming world. So let’s get started.
Let’s start with the obvious one: there will be one, maybe two new consoles that will come out next year. The consoles I’m talking about are the next Xbox and the next PlayStation. I’m 100% sure the next Xbox will come out around the Holiday season. We’ve been hearing about for awhile all the leaks and rumors, and even Microsoft has given hints here and there. Microsoft is definitely ready to bring out their next console. For more Microsoft predictions, Cory has written a good piece here. Now the one I’m not sure about is the next PlayStation. I really don’t think Sony will release a new console till 2014, which could hurt them once again. We saw it with this current generation of consoles and only now is the PS3 being successful. But I am sure Sony will announce it at E3.
Nintendo is next on my list and my predictions for them have to do with the Wii U. I believe that the sales of the Wii U will start to die down early next year and won’t pick up for the entire year. This is because Nintendo still hasn’t really announced any games for their console. All we have right now is Pikmin 3. That really isn’t enough for most people to buy the Wii U. Now of course this could change, but in order for it to change Nintendo would have to show off some new games at E3. Games like a new Zelda, Metroid, and a new Mario game (and no I’m not talking about a Mario game like the one that just came out). More along the lines of a new Mario Galaxy game. If Nintendo can do this we might see the Wii U sales pick up.
Next thing on my prediction list is to prepare yourself come June. You thought this year was bad? Next year will be worse. The drought will start around June and end around October. This will most likely be because most developers are working on games for next gen titles. Just be ready, and if you have a back catalog of games you want to get to I suggest waiting till June to start on it.
THQ is dead, long live THQ
This next one hurts me to say this but I have to. THQ will go under and will have to sell of all their IP’s. The reason I say this is because all of their games that are coming out are coming out the same time as other major games are coming out. For example, Metro: Last Light comes out in March. This game needs to sell pretty well in order for THQ to stay afloat. That’s the same time Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, God War: Ascension, Gears of War: Judgement and Simcity come out. Yea, pretty big list of games. And since Metro isn’t a big name game it’s going to suffer if it comes out in March.
What I believe THQ should do is delay all their games until the summer time and bring them all out around the game drought I talked about earlier. That way, THQ can maximize their sales on all their games that come out. If they don’t do this then I see no way they can get the sales numbers they need in order to stay alive.
If THQ does go under then one of two things will happen. The first one, which alot of people have been speculating, is that Ubisoft will buy the publisher and all of their IPs. I myself don’t see this happening. Instead, I think the second will happen and that is THQ will sell their IPs to multiple publishers. I see Ubisoft picking up a couple of them though. The one that comes to mind is Darksiders. Again I hate to say it, I love THQ and their games, but it’s really hard to see them come out of this alive.
The last thing I want to talk about is some game predictions. Most of these I believe will come out on the next gen consoles, so here we go. I should just get this first one out of the way: I say it every year and that is we will get a announcement on Half Life 3. I know chances are high we will hear nothing again, but I do believe we will hear something at E3. Next prediction is Fallout 4. This game will be a launch title for the next gen consoles. Lastly, Alan Wake 2. This will probably be announced as a launch title for the next Xbox at Microsoft’s press conference at E3.
Well, there you have my predictions of what will happen in 2013. Now there will probably be a lot more that happens but I think these will be the big things that happen in 2013. What do you think? Do you agree on anything that I said? Have anything to add? Then post below in the comments and let me know.
