Video Game Music of the Week: Persona 3

When it comes to RPGs, Persona 3 has one of the craziest, most diverse soundtracks around.

Game: Persona 3 (PS2-2006 [JP])

Persona 3 is arguably the greatest JRPG about highschool students simulating suicide in order to summon monsters. In my opinion, the Shin Megami Tensei series as a whole has surpassed the Final Fantasy games in terms of gameplay, story, and music. The music for most of the SMT games has been composed by Shoji Meguro, who has also taken over as director for several titles. However, this week we are simply focusing on the soundtrack for Persona 3. Take a listen to the game’s opening track “Burn My Dread”:

More music after the jump!

The slick anime style opening seems light and happy enough until about 0:57 where the song really kicks in. Sure, the choppy “Engrish” is a bit silly, but the track is still very cool.

Here is the track “The Poem For Everyone’s Souls”, a haunting track which plays whenever you enter The Velvet Room:

Here is the track “Iwatodai Station”, a funky chill-out song that plays whenever you are in your dormitory/ base of operations:

Finally, we have the main battle music “Mass Destruction”, a song with both rapping and singing that you normally wouldn’t expect in a typical JRPG, yet it works surprisingly well:
