Windows Phone 8 to have “Killer Games”

Windows Phone 8 has a major focus on mobile gaming.

Microsoft has lifted the curtain on their newest entry into the mobile platform, Windows Phone 8. Some major features include a new star menu and a new wallet hub, but Microsoft has said that Windows Phone 8 will have a big push for “killer games.”

During their live presentation, Microsoft described what they are calling a Shared Windows Core. This allows developers to make games for all Windows 8 platforms, which includes Windows Phone 8. (I would bet that also includes the next Xbox) The new core is build with Direct 3D, c+, and C++ , and companies like Havok will be bringing their full physics engine to Windows Phone 8.

The live demos on stage did look quite impressive for a mobile phone, but it was really the physics engine by Havok that was impressive. Havok showed off a lot of simple demos that showed many different elements, like destructible environments and facial animation, that looked very impressive for a mobile device. Some titles confirmed for the platform were Asphalt 7, Nova 3 and Fairway Solitaire. All games built on Windows Phone 8 will support HD resolutions and can be easily ported to Microsoft Windows 8 tablets.

Windows Phone 8 will launch sometime in the Fall of 2012.
